The Great Race

According to Chinese legend, the Jade Emperor decided to create a calendar and invited all animals to participate in a race. The first twelve animals to cross the river would have a year named after them in the zodiac cycle.

The Rat, being small but clever, asked the Ox for a ride across the river. The kind Ox agreed, and just as they were about to reach the finish line, the Rat jumped off the Ox's head and became the first animal to cross, earning the first position in the zodiac cycle.
